i live in austria in europe and you pretty much cant find any swimsuites besides bikinis or one-pieces. and wearing bikinis is normal - even at church swim parties my friends wear bikinis. is it really distracting for girls to wear bikinis? so im just wondering... do you guys think it's really immodest for a girls to wear bikinis?

obviously i'm not a guy, but i've always been against wearing bikinis. just too darn revealing! your stomach and legs are completely showing, nevertheless usually your chest. i always look for the least revealing swimsuits possible, usually no v-necks for me. tankinis are good in my book. and if the swimsuit doesn't come with shorts already, i'll get some.

Well, I believe that wearing bikinis reveals way too much skin; and since that's what most people wear, it's really hard for me to find a nice, modest bathing suit.
I always wear a regular bathing suit, but I put a rash guard shirt over it. Then, I wear guy swimming shorts over the bottom.
Some of my cousins think that I want to become a nun (LOL, not really, but they act like that's what I'm doing).

Ok, I'm a stickler... (so yes, I like the book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves") I don't like the use of modest here.

The classic "modesty" passage:
...women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.
(1 Timothy 2:9-10)

The word translated "modest" here is kosmios, which means "well arranged, seemly, modest" NOT "not sexually provocative". I have several friends who have used that passage as an excuse to be lazy and not take care of themselves, and so it drives me nuts when it's misused like that. Modest still means "observing the proprieties of dress and behavior" (Merriam Webster)... so it's not a translator error- it's that we're butchering the English, and that's never a good thing.

In the modern sense of what's appropriate dress, bikinis are no longer immodest. However I'd say the modern standards have been lowered, and are not really worth the title of "standards". If you want to blend in, and go with the flow, you could call them appropriate, however I think older standards not only are more appropriate (considerate of others, or men, at least), but actually look better. Modern aesthetics are in the pits... I say it's time for retro to come back (for what it's worth, I thought that was an awesome part of the Nancy Drew movie- her retro edge...)

Are they distracting? They can be... since I'm currently at a point of not pursuing girls at all right now, I can kinda ignore girls in them, but it takes a decent amount of work. It's not really considerate to wear them.

Agreed.

That passage is more related to humility than modesty anyhow in my opinion. There are better passages that talk about not causing your brothers to stumble (I forget where) and that's a more appropriate verse for modesty. As for what modesty is, there are a number of places to learn...the bible is the most important. Another good place is

which I found with google. They seem well written and knowledgeable.

im pretty against bikinis simply because they remind me of underwear. seriously. they dont cover any more. why would you want to walk around in your underwear??? so im a big fan of tankinis. with shorts or like a skirt thingy.

Tankini's are a two piece outfit. Bikini bottoms and a cut off top... Like a bikini, but has extra material covering the middle... LOL

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
'Cause you won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

i personally would never wear a bikini, ever, but i do know some people who where more of a sports bikini (kinda like a sports bra and bikini cut undies) with one of those surf shirts over it and some swim shorts.i think in terms of modesty, a one piece is the way to go, but you can get away with a tankini as well. i personally would prefer a tankini because it's easier to change in and out of it. I know at my youth group lots of girls would go searching for a tankini and they would just wear a pair of shorts ontop of them for some added modesty. actually, almost every girl had shorts ontop of their suit just because at poolparties and at the beach, when you horse around, your suit tends to shift and you tug in down and you end up looking like your wearing granny panties.

And to go along with what eddi was saying, i think bikini's cover less then undies do, although it depends on what kinda undies you wear.

i recently bought a swimsuit and it is a bikini. my suggestion is to buy shorts and a mens under shirt to go over it. it turns out to be more modest than anything else i could find.

Yeah, Bekah, that's exactly what I did too. I have a bikini, but I would NEVER wear it without anything over the top! I wear a sunshirt (boy, they're hard to find) and boardies over it. Problem solved for me!!
Plus, I burn easily, so it's also practical!

God Can.

haha I wear guys swim shorts ;-] Those tend to be HUGE on me, though, so I just wear like soccer shorts or something when I'm swimming, and I wear the guys shorts as... shorts... =]

you know how you go to a concert or something and you can buy a tshirt or if you help out in something like a summer camp, they give you one of those gender neutral tshirts, that's what a lot of girls i know wear. they just have to make sure that it's a darker color or a thicker shirt so nothing shows when it gets wet

I agree. Bikinis show too much skin. Sure you'll look hot in them, but what are we going for? Sexy or Godly? your pick. Tankinis are cute!!! Personally the whole guy shorts isn't my thing (im a girly girl lol) but a cute skirt is a lovely addend!!!

Yeah, bikinis show way too much skin!!!!! As MyLifeHisWill said "Sexy or Godly"...
As a guy...I think tankinis are nice but i also like the skirt idea. Personally i would rather see a girl in a tankini with a skirt on than with shorts on. (just my opinion though) :)

Hey, i'm new in this forum, but actually i've always thought bikinis were way too revealing, and i've always gone for the one piece swim suits. haha. Maybe it's just me, but i always felt way too "naked" in a bikini.

me too, nicole! i would wear a one piece if i could find any cute ones where i live that don't have an open back (kinda defeats the purpose of closing up your stomach :p).

Oh Yeah! I know! It is hard to find a really cute one piece bathing suit, especially one without a low back. [I agree it totally defeats the purpose] I have two that i think are kinda cute, but i found them at costco haha. Good luck with looking!
